How to re-oil a wooden desk accessory (10 minutes, twice a year)

Hardwax oil is not a permanent coating — it sits in the top layer of the wood and slowly wears away where hands touch it. Refreshing it takes about ten minutes and keeps a piece looking new for years.

When it needs doing

Drop a bead of water on the surface. If it beads up, leave it alone. If the wood darkens where the water sits, the finish has worn through and it is time to re-oil. For most desks that is roughly every six to twelve months.

What you need

A lint-free cloth, fine sandpaper (320 grit or higher), and any food-safe hardwax oil or pure tung oil. Skip anything labelled “polish” — silicone-based sprays sit on top and make future re-oiling patchy.

The steps

Wipe the piece clean and let it dry fully. Sand lightly along the grain, just enough to knock off the roughness — you are not removing material. Dust it off, then rub a thin coat of oil in with the cloth, again along the grain. Wait fifteen minutes and wipe away everything that has not soaked in. Leftover oil is what turns sticky.

Then leave it alone

Give it a few hours before putting anything back on top, and a full day before setting down a warm laptop. The grain will look slightly deeper than before — that is the finish sitting where it should.
